WHAT DOES PERSONAL CARE MEAN?
SUPPORT WITH THE THINGS THAT HELP YOU FEEL LIKE YOURSELF
Personal care is about much more than helping someone wash or get dressed.
It is about supporting a person to manage everyday routines while protecting their dignity, privacy, choices and independence.
Depending on the person's assessed needs and agreed care plan, personal care may include support with:
- Washing and bathing
Showering - Dressing and undressing
Toileting - Continence support
- Oral hygiene
- Grooming
- Personal appearance
- Getting up and going to bed
- Moving safely around the home
- Preparing for the day
- Getting ready for appointments or activities
Every person's care is different.
We take time to understand what the individual can do independently, where they need assistance and how they prefer to receive that support.
DOES SOMEONE YOU LOVE NEED MORE HELP AT HOME?
YOU MAY BE NOTICING CHANGES BEFORE THEY ARE
Sometimes a family member does not say they need help.
Instead, you may notice that:
- Mum has stopped having baths because getting in and out has become difficult.
- Dad is wearing the same clothes for several days.
- Your parent is becoming less confident moving around the bathroom.
- Personal care is taking much longer than it used to.
- You are having to visit more often just to help with basic routines.
- You are worried about what might happen if you are not there.
These can be signs that a little extra support could make everyday life safer, easier and more manageable.
You do not need to wait until things become a crisis before asking for help.
CARE BUILT AROUND THE PERSON
NOT A ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL CARE PLAN
We believe personal care should feel personal.
Before care starts, we take time to understand:
- How does the person like to start their morning?
- What can they do for themselves?
- What do they need help with?
- What routines are important to them?
- What makes them feel comfortable?
- What would they like to continue doing independently?
The answers help us create a care plan around the person rather than expecting the person to fit around a standard service.
We support independence wherever appropriate.
That might mean allowing someone to wash their face independently while helping with other areas.
It might mean giving someone time to dress themselves rather than rushing to do everything for them.
It might mean providing reassurance while they complete a task.
Good care is not about doing everything for someone.
It is about providing the right support at the right time.
WHAT PERSONAL CARE CAN LOOK LIKE
SUPPORT WITH EVERYDAY ROUTINES
Washing & Bathing
We can provide respectful support with washing, bathing or showering according to the person's preferences and care plan.
Privacy and dignity are always important.
Dressing
We can help someone choose appropriate clothing, get dressed and prepare for the day while encouraging them to do whatever they can independently.
Toileting & Continence
We can provide agreed support with toileting and continence needs while maintaining privacy and dignity.
Grooming & Personal Appearance
Support can include everyday grooming such as hair care, oral hygiene and maintaining a person's usual appearance.
Getting Up & Getting Ready
For someone who finds mornings difficult, practical support getting out of bed and starting the day can make a significant difference.
Mobility Around the Home
Where included in the agreed care plan, carers can provide practical assistance with everyday movement and transfers within their role and training.
PERSONAL CARE IS ABOUT MORE THAN THE TASK
IT IS ABOUT HOW THE PERSON FEELS
A personal care visit may only last a short time.
But the way that support is delivered can affect someone's whole day.
We want the person receiving care to feel:
Respected: Not rushed or spoken over.
Involved: Included in decisions about their own care.
Comfortable: Supported in a way that respects their preferences and routines.
Independent: Encouraged to do what they can for themselves.
Safe: Supported in accordance with their assessed needs and agreed care plan.
FAMILIAR FACES MATTER
BUILDING TRUST TAKES TIME
Having someone new arrive at the door can feel uncomfortable, particularly when personal care is involved.
Where possible, we aim to provide consistency so that people can get to know the carers who support them.
Over time, a familiar carer can learn:
- How you like your tea.
- Which clothes you prefer.
- How you like your morning routine.
- What makes you feel comfortable.
- When something does not seem quite right.
That familiarity helps care become part of normal life rather than something that constantly feels unfamiliar.

CARE SHOULD FEEL HUMAN
Papa Home Care was created from a very personal experience.
Our founder knows what it feels like to be a family member trying to find the right care for someone you love — and how frustrating it can be when care starts to feel like a system rather than a relationship.
That experience shaped the way Papa was built.
We wanted to create a local care provider where families could:
Speak to real people.
- Know who is caring for their loved one.
- Feel listened to.
- Get help when circumstances change.
- Have confidence that care is built around the individual.
That's why Papa Home Care exists.

PERSONAL CARE FAQS
What is personal care at home?
Personal care at home means providing practical assistance with everyday personal routines while the person remains living in their own home.
This can include activities such as washing, bathing, dressing, toileting, grooming and getting ready for the day or night.
Does personal care mean someone has to do everything for me?
No.
Our approach is to support independence wherever appropriate.
The aim is to help someone do what they can for themselves while providing assistance where they need it.
Can you help with bathing and showering?
Yes, where bathing or showering support is identified as appropriate within the person's assessment and care plan.
Can you help with dressing?
Yes. Dressing and undressing can be included where this is part of the agreed care plan.
Can you provide continence support?
Yes, where this is within the agreed care arrangements and the person's assessed needs.
Can I request the same carer?
We aim for consistency wherever possible, although we cannot guarantee that the same individual will be available for every visit.
Our goal is to build a familiar care team around the person.
How often can someone receive personal care?
Care frequency depends on the person's needs.
Some people may need one visit a day, while others may need support at different times throughout the day.
We'll discuss this during assessment.
How quickly can personal care start?
We aim to arrange care promptly, subject to assessment, staffing and availability.
For urgent situations, tell us what is happening and we'll discuss what may be possible.
Can personal care be short-term?
Yes.
Personal care may be needed temporarily following illness, surgery, injury or hospitalisation, as well as on a longer-term basis.
What happens if my loved one's needs change?
We can review the care plan and discuss whether the level or type of support should change.
Can personal care be combined with other services?
Yes.
Personal care can form part of a wider care arrangement alongside companionship, medication support, respite or Hospital-to-Home support where appropriate.
Are you CQC registered?

How much does personal care cost in Chelmsford?
